User Research Lead

The User Research Lead is responsible for leading all research across projects, clients and industries. The User Research Lead is a thought leader and a passionate advocate of user needs based design, design thinking, and service design.

Role Description:

The successful candidate will:

  • Work with the UR&D Practice Lead to define develop and lead an innovative and delivery focused research process across projects, clients and industries
  • Be involved in projects from discovery through design, development, test, release and measurement
  • Lead, motivate and develop a team of researchers
  • Ensure standards of quality are maintained within the research team
  • Support and provide best practice guidance to other researchers
  • Manage third party agencies conducting user research
  • Communicate credibly to a wide range of digital delivery disciplines
  • Work very closely with insight and research teams at client side to delivery relevant and appropriate research plans
  • Apply knowledge in human factors, rapid ethnography, and the user-centred design process to product and service design
  • Lead, plan, design, and conduct user research to focus the design and development on user needs
  • Present findings and related design/business recommendations and user insights to project stakeholders at all levels
  • Comply with all confidentiality and non-disclosure policies and/or agreements and ensures security of information at all times

Required Experience:

  • Significant experience in a relevant role either agency or client side
  • Experience leading a design team
  • Significant experience in large commercial agile projects
  • Significant experience in researching and managing the research of successful digital products
  • Significant experience of gathering and delivering actionable insights
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience in user centred design practices
  • Demonstrable experience of delivering as part of an agile team

    • Sound awareness of business and project constraints as they apply to the design of digital products and services
    • Experience of working in a full service digital agency environment
    • Experience working in Government or Financial Services sectors
    • Active participant in communities of interest
    • Thought leader in design research, design thinking, or service design
    • Expert knowledge of qualitative research methods including user requirements gathering and early stage concept and prototype testing, guerrilla research, and other approaches to ensuring user needs are fully understood
    • Expert knowledge of using artefacts to share and communicate insights such as user flows, experience maps, experience blueprints, prioritised user needs, user profiles, and test results
    • Expert knowledge and understanding of quantitative research methods
    • Sound understanding of information architecture, interaction design, and visual design principles
    • Sound awareness of business and project constraints as they apply to user research
    • Highly capable of effective prioritisation of tasks and personal time management
    • A sound understanding of Agile delivery methodology
    • Able to work flexibly and to tight deadlines
    • Degree in HCI/Usability/Cognitive Psychology or related field

    Kainos is a professional services organisation with clients spread across the globe and we deliver projects both from client site, and from our offices. While we will attempt to base you on projects near or at your contracted office location, you need to be willing to travel to client sites and spend time away during the week if it is required.
